What is a

 Justice of the Peace

and what do they do?

Pima County Justice Court serves community members who are cited by Pima County Sheriff, University of Arizona Police, as well as Tribal Police. Judges in Justice Court are elected, rather than appointed and are called Justices of the Peace.

Justices of the Peace oversee:

​

  • misdemeanor crimes

  • civil lawsuits 

  • evictions 

  • small claims 

  • civil traffic infractions

​​

Justices of the Peace grant:

​

  • Orders of Protection 

  • Injunctions Against Harassment

  • Search Warrants

  • Warrants for Arrest

​​

​​Justices of the Peace oversee cases like:​

​

  • Shoplifting & Theft

  • Criminal Trespassing

  • Criminal Damage

  • Assault

  • Threat/Intimidation

  • Disorderly Conduct 

  • Reckless Driving

  • Speed Racing

  • DUI  

​​

Justice of the Peace must be:

​

  • at least 18 years old,

  • a resident of Arizona,

  • a qualified voter in the precinct,

  • fluent in spoken and written English

​​

....and they're not required to have a law degree or license to practice law.
